Arizona Senate President refers AG Mayes and Secretary of State Fontes to DOJ for obstruction. Senate President Warren Petersen announced Tuesday he has referred Attorney General Kris Mayes and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes to the U.S. Department of Justice, accusing them of obstruction after they sent a letter asking questions about what records Petersen handed over in response to a federal subpoena related to Arizona's 2020 election "audit." Mayes fired back, calling it a politically motivated attempt to distract from what she characterized as Petersen's efforts to lay groundwork to dispute the 2026 election results. Petersen is running for attorney general this year and could face Mayes in the general election.

One challenge alleges his nominating petitions listed a business address instead of the required residential address; another was filed by a fellow independent candidate and alleges numerous other signature defects.
