Democratic members of Congress demand answers after finding Mesa ICE facility packed "like sardines." U.S. Reps. Yassamin Ansari, Adelita Grijalva, and Greg Stanton made a surprise oversight visit Thursday to the Arizona Removal Operations Coordination Center at Mesa-Gateway Airport — and found rooms rated for 21 people holding 40–50 detainees sleeping on concrete floors without bedding. The facility is designed for stays under 12 hours, but the average in 2026 has grown to 36 hours; one individual stayed 18 days during a peak population of 777. The lawmakers sent a letter to DHS — flagging potential violations of federal detention standards and calling the conditions "appallingly short" of basic human dignity — and demanded responses by April 24. DHS did not respond to requests for comment.

Pinal County board calls county attorney a "vigilante" for signing unauthorized ICE deal. Attorneys for Pinal County's Board of Supervisors filed a legal brief urging a court to nullify County Attorney Brad Miller's 287(g) immigration enforcement agreement with ICE, arguing Miller signed the deal without board approval — an act described as acting as "a vigilante outside the bounds of their appropriate, statutory authority." Arizona law requires governing bodies, not individual elected officials, to enter contracts. A Pinal County Superior Court judge had already placed a temporary restraining order on Miller's enforcement of the deal; a hearing on whether the lawsuit proceeds is set for April 15.

Arizona's three public universities secretly dismantled DEI programs with no public disclosure. ASU, NAU, and the University of Arizona have renamed programs, consolidated cultural resource centers, and scrubbed websites over the past year following a February 2025 federal threat to cut funding if universities continued DEI promotion — all without telling students, faculty, or the public what changed. Officials declined interviews and stonewalled public records requests. The moves came even though a federal judge ruled the Trump administration's guidance illegal in August. Higher education experts attributed the continued secrecy to a "chilling effect" from the administration's ongoing assault on higher education.

Gas prices in Pima County beginning to ease, but relief may take weeks. AAA reported the average gas price in Pima County at approximately $4.50/gallon as of April 10 — nearly $1 above last month's figure. Prices are starting to inch down as the Strait of Hormuz has reopened, but GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan cautioned prices may not dip below $4 for weeks, and recommended drivers watch the state of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire before filling their tanks.

Record coffee bean prices and rising utility costs squeeze Tucson's small coffee shops. Coffee bean prices have surged past $9.60/lb — up more than $2 from a year ago — driven by tariffs on exports from Brazil and Colombia. At Fratelli Espresso on the Northside, owner Rodrigo Sanchez says his monthly bean costs jumped from $300 to $350, while rent and electricity now run $2,500–$2,800/month. He has absorbed labor costs by relying entirely on family and is buying in bulk to avoid steep menu price increases.
