🚨 Public Safety

Four law enforcement shootings in eight days draw scrutiny. The Tucson area saw four officer-involved shootings between April 6 and April 13, two of them fatal — including the death of 15-year-old Joannie Jose Armenta, who was shot during a standoff after police say he raised what turned out to be a toy gun wrapped in cloth. Pima County Supervisor Matt Heinz, whose district covers all four incidents, called the cluster "a bit of an unusual burst of activity" but said the spike does not reflect broader crime trends; overall violent crime fell in Tucson and Pima County in 2025.

The teen and 22-year-old Christian Isiah Randall are both charged with second-degree murder; Anna's father is pushing for "Anna's Law," which would make street racing with injury or death a mandatory felony with required prison time.

Judge expected to rule today on Hernandez primary ballot eligibility. A Pima County Superior Court judge has until today to decide whether state Rep. Alma Hernandez can remain on July's Democratic primary ballot. Hernandez, who represents the 20th legislative district covering downtown Tucson, faces disqualification over $20,355 in unpaid campaign finance fines; her defense argues the fines are unenforceable under a 2018 Arizona Supreme Court ruling. Primary opponent and former Tucson city council member Rocque Perez says he will appeal to the state supreme court if the ruling goes against him.
