🚨 Public Safety
Tucson immediately cuts speed limits on 14 roads amid surge in pedestrian deaths. The City of Tucson is reducing speed limits on 14 roadways and nine bicycle boulevards, effective immediately, following a dramatic spike in traffic-related fatalities. Ward 6 Council Member Miranda Schubert said pedestrian deaths are up nearly 300% compared to the same period in 2025, citing multiple fatal crashes including a 3-year-old girl killed during a street-racing incident on Valencia Road — where the limit drops from 40 to 30 mph. Mayor Regina Romero announced roughly $900,000 will be budgeted for police to crack down on drag racing, with a progress report due at the May 5 study session.
🏛️ Government
Pima County voters will decide in November whether to lift the county's decades-old spending cap. The Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 Tuesday to place an Expenditure Limit Adjustment question on the Nov. 3 ballot. If approved, the measure would permanently raise the county's spending ceiling by $70 million — roughly 75% above the current base — without increasing tax rates. County Finance Director Art Cuaron warned that Arizona's 1980-era cap formula could soon force the county into a legal paradox: collecting tax revenue it is prohibited by law from spending.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says his prior disciplinary record as a Texas police officer is 'irrelevant.' An attorney for Sheriff Nanos told the Board of Supervisors that their inquiry into his work history as a Texas cop more than four decades ago has no bearing on his current elected position. The supervisors had requested information about Nanos's disciplinary record in his prior law enforcement career.
Arizona House advances bill requiring police to notify ICE when arresting suspected undocumented persons — directly affecting Pima County. The state House gave preliminary approval Tuesday to Senate Bill 1055, which would mandate all Arizona law enforcement agencies to alert U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or CBP after arresting someone believed to be undocumented, eliminating local agency discretion. Pima County Sheriff Nanos has declined to enter into a 287(g) partnership with ICE. Gov. Katie Hobbs is expected to veto the measure.
Judge blocks Arizona water rule that had halted new housing construction across the Phoenix Valley. Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Scott Blaney ruled Tuesday that the Arizona Department of Water Resources' "unmet demand" rule — used to deny assured water supply certificates in the Phoenix Active Management Area — was implemented without following the state's required rulemaking process and is therefore illegal. The rule had blocked new home-building in Queen Creek, Goodyear, and Buckeye since 2023; ADWR says it plans to appeal once a final judgment is issued.
