Arizona AG Kris Mayes files lawsuit to block ICE detention warehouse in Surprise. Attorney General Kris Mayes filed suit Friday against the Trump administration over its plan to convert a 418,400-square-foot commercial warehouse in Surprise into an immigration detention center. Mayes argues the building — directly across a street from a hazardous chemical storage facility — violates federal law, including NEPA, the Immigration and Nationality Act, and the Administrative Procedure Act. "The federal government wants to open a jail inside a documented chemical hazard zone," Mayes said. The facility was originally planned for 1,500 beds and recently scaled back to 542, with 250 people slated to be housed by September.
Federal appeals court strikes down Trump's asylum border closure. A D.C. Circuit Court panel ruled Friday that Trump's Inauguration Day 2025 executive order and subsequent guidance barring asylum seekers at the border are "unlawful," finding they violate federal immigration law. The White House said the Department of Justice will seek further review. The ruling has direct significance for Southern Arizona, where border communities have borne the full weight of Trump-era enforcement changes.
