Southside community holds vigil for neighbors held by ICE. Community members gathered Saturday morning at Sixth Avenue and Benson on Tucson's Southside for a candlelight vigil organized by the Good Neighbor Interfaith Coalition to remember residents taken by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Attendees pinned flowers next to names of those in custody and called for due process and respect for detainees. KGUN 9 reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and awaited a response.

Trump NASA cuts would leave UA's OSIRIS-APEX asteroid mission dead in space. The Trump administration has proposed canceling funding for several NASA science missions with University of Arizona ties, including the OSIRIS-APEX asteroid probe currently flying through space. The cuts have alarmed UA researchers and space science advocates, who warn that defunding an already-launched mission would waste prior investment and set back planetary science.
Tucson and Pima County cooling centers open early ahead of heat. Dozens of free cooling centers opened across the Tucson region Friday in anticipation of temperatures expected to top 100°F this weekend and into early next week. The centers are intended to protect vulnerable populations — elderly residents, unhoused individuals, and others without reliable air conditioning — during the prolonged heat event.
TUSD formally begins evaluating school closures and consolidations. Two UA professors named 2026 Guggenheim Fellows. Amphitheater Public Schools earns Arizona's 'Copper Apple' award. Tohono O'odham youth name rare southern Arizona ocelot. A wild ocelot roaming southern Arizona now has a name: Himdam, the O'odham word for "traveler." Tohono O'odham youth selected the name, connecting the rare sighting to Indigenous language and cultural stewardship of the land.
Tucson civic leader Fred Boice dies at 96. Longtime Tucson rancher, civic leader, and champion of higher education Fred Boice died Tuesday, May 5. He was 96. Boice was widely respected for his contributions to the University of Arizona and southern Arizona's civic and agricultural communities.
