Census data shows Tucson's population growth has stalled. New figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show Tucson joins Phoenix and other large Arizona cities in seeing growth flatline or reverse. The shift marks a notable departure for a metro that had recorded steady expansion in recent years; the report does not detail contributing factors.
DOJ announces $1.776B "anti-weaponization" fund; Arizona senators respond. The U.S. Department of Justice unveiled a $1.776 billion settlement fund Monday after President Trump dropped a multi-billion-dollar lawsuit against the IRS over the leak of his tax returns. Democrats, including Sen. Ruben Gallego, condemned the arrangement as a "slush fund" for Trump allies and Jan. 6 defendants; Sen. Mark Kelly said Trump is "using his own Department of Justice to pay himself." An amicus brief from 93 House Democrats urged a federal judge to immediately dismiss what they called a "collusive lawsuit."
Arizona school voucher audit finds oversight "haphazard," riddled with gaps. The Arizona Auditor General released a report Monday finding the state's universal Empowerment Scholarship Account program suffers from significant accountability failures. The Arizona Department of Education was found to have prioritized clearing parent payment backlogs over implementing required oversight laws, and failed to recover funds spent on unallowable purchases, including a $1,000 expenditure flagged in the audit.
Forest Service budget cuts and restructuring challenge Arizona fire response. The U.S. Forest Service is overhauling its organizational structure and revising its wildfire strategy as budget cuts constrain the agency entering fire season. The changes could affect how Arizona's national forests — including those in proximity to the Tucson metro — are managed and protected during an increasingly active fire season.
Vail Unified explores restructuring Vail Academy amid enrollment decline. Vail Unified School District is weighing a possible shift to a K-8 model at Vail Academy and High School after high school enrollment has dropped over five years, costing the district roughly $1 million. Superintendent John Carruth stressed at a packed town hall Monday that the school is not closing; the district's next step is forming a parent focus group to guide the process over the coming year.
Gallego urges DOJ to review $111B Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. Sen. Ruben Gallego wrote to the Department of Justice asking it to scrutinize the proposed $111 billion Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, citing concern that mass layoffs from the deal could threaten Arizona's estimated 11,600 movie theater jobs and cause broader local economic damage.

Tucson City Council seals deal keeping Udall Park pickleball courts free. Tucson City Council reached a memorandum of understanding with Tucson Area Pickleball (TAP) under which the city will not charge court fees at Morris K. Udall Park. In exchange, TAP has assumed responsibility for court maintenance, resurfacing, and equipment — investing $55,000 to date — while the city retains responsibility for surrounding grounds and infrastructure. Players had organized for more than a month against a proposed $3.50-per-session fee, arguing it would deter play at what has become one of the busiest free court venues in the city.
