Tucson man arrested in downtown mass shooting faces 29 counts. A man arrested in the July 19 shooting that wounded nine people along East Congress Street now faces 29 counts, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in the downtown entertainment district.
Giffords joins local officials at gun violence prevention panel. Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords appeared with Tucson and Pima County officials at a panel pushing gun safety legislation, Tucson Spotlight reported, days after the downtown shooting that injured nine people.
Chemical spill in Sonora could reach San Pedro basin. A hazardous chemical spill in the Upper San Pedro watershed in Sonora could affect the north-flowing San Pedro River in Arizona, a hydrologist told the Arizona Daily Star. The river's course carries water into southeastern Arizona from Mexico.

City to expand Sun on Demand service to the east side. The City of Tucson announced that a new Sun on Demand zone launches Sunday, Aug. 16, covering the area from Tanque Verde Road to Golf Links Road and Wilmot Road to Houghton Road. The city said in a release it will be the largest zone in the free, on-demand transit program, roughly double the size of existing zones.
Tucson DACA recipients describe being targeted by immigration enforcement. The Arizona Daily Star reported on Tucson "Dreamers," including a University of Arizona senior brought to the city as a toddler, who say they have been swept into enforcement actions. KOLD reported that Tucson officials spoke publicly in support of DACA recipients now facing deportation proceedings.

U of A among universities receiving federal Education Department request. AZPM reported the Trump administration issued a "call to action" to the University of Arizona and other universities. President Suresh Garimella told the campus community Monday that the communication from the U.S. Secretary of Education includes a questionnaire on how universities support national priorities, according to a message posted by the university.

Cooling centers reach thousands, but gaps persist. AZPM reported that Pima County cooling centers have provided heat relief to thousands of residents while significant service gaps remain. Separately, local leaders and community advocates called for federal action to protect children and families from extreme heat as the school year begins, KVOA reported.

TUSD outlines cyberbullying rules ahead of new school year. Tucson Unified is reminding parents to monitor students' online activity and has outlined the district's cyberbullying rules and consequences as classes resume, KGUN 9 reported.
Continental board approves pay-to-play for ESA students. The Continental School District governing board voted 4-0-1 on Friday to let families who accept state Empowerment Scholarship Account money play sports for the district for a fee, according to Green Valley News.

Salad and Go to close all locations, including seven in Tucson. The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will permanently close every restaurant, with final service Wednesday, Aug. 5. Founded in Gilbert in 2013, the company operated seven Tucson-area locations along with stores in metro Phoenix and Nevada.

Select Specialty Hospital Tucson East closes. The long-term acute care facility has closed and is no longer admitting new patients, KVOA reported.
Rio Nuevo cash reserves nearly depleted. The downtown tax increment financing district's reserves are close to exhausted following a roughly 25% drop in monthly revenue, leaving about $1 million for new projects as it weighs funding requests from local businesses, according to Tucson Spotlight's Spanish-language report.
