City Council adopts strict data center zoning rules in 6-1 vote. The Tucson City Council voted 6-1 Wednesday to adopt new zoning regulations for large-scale data centers, requiring rezoning review, water and noise safeguards and a half-mile setback from homes. Arizona Luminaria reports the mayor and council also directed city staff to keep studying stricter rules or a potential outright ban after residents told the council the proposed regulations did not go far enough.

Legal challenge filed against Proposition 144. A city councilman has filed a legal challenge to Proposition 144, arguing that the measure's five key provisions should be put to voters separately rather than as a single question, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The measure is slated for the statewide ballot that Pima County voters will decide.
Sun on Demand adds east side zone Aug. 16. The City of Tucson said in a release that its free, on-demand transit service will launch a new east side zone beginning Sunday, Aug. 16, covering the area from Tanque Verde Road to Golf Links Road and Wilmot Road to Houghton Road. The city said it is the largest Sun on Demand zone to date, roughly double the size of existing zones.

One killed, one hurt crossing East Speedway. One man was killed and another seriously injured Tuesday night when they were struck by a car while crossing East Speedway near North Craycroft Road, Tucson police said. The Arizona Daily Star reported the account from police; no further details on the driver were released.
Downtown mass shooting suspect due for arraignment. The man accused in last month's mass shooting in downtown Tucson is scheduled to appear in court Friday for his arraignment, according to KVOA. Separately, two people who pleaded guilty in the killing of Paul Clifford are set to be sentenced Friday, the station reported.
Storm damage sends cleanup crews to Tucson parks. Cleanup crews were deployed to multiple Tucson parks after this week's storms caused widespread damage across the city, KVOA reported. Additional storm chances continue through the weekend.

Del Lago Golf Club, the centerpiece of the master-planned Rancho del Lago community in Vail, is closing, according to a statement from its owners reported by KGUN 9. KOLD reported the closure comes amid rising costs and declining demand, leaving employees looking for work and raising concerns about the local economy.
Project Uptown nears first-phase completion at old Foothills Mall site. Construction on the first phase of Project Uptown, the redevelopment of the former Foothills Mall on Tucson's northside, is nearly finished, KGUN 9 reported. Developers are targeting a January 2027 opening for a Tempo by Hilton hotel at the site.
Salad and Go files for bankruptcy, closes locations. The Arizona-based drive-thru chain Salad and Go has filed for bankruptcy and announced the immediate closure of all of its locations, according to AZPM. The company operated stores in the Tucson area.
Three Points residents push back on proposed solar farm. Some Three Points residents and farmers are opposing a proposed solar project that would cover more than 5,500 acres of Arizona State Land near Robles Junction, KGUN 9 reported. Opponents raised concerns at a community meeting about the scale of the project.

Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona has merged with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, a move officials said was driven by long-term operational and financial sustainability, according to KOLD. Officials described the combination as a way to keep home-delivered meal service running.
Mutual aid groups shift schedules as heat persists. Community mutual aid groups including ALMA and Community Care Tucson are adjusting distribution hours and expanding hydration networks to address gaps in the city's heat response, Tucson Spotlight reported in a Spanish-language article.
