Pima County to draft data center moratorium. County staff will develop a moratorium on data center development, AZPM reported, as scrutiny of the facilities' water and power demands grows. The move comes amid broader lender and community pushback on data center projects nationally.
Judge declines to halt border wall on Tohono O'odham land. A federal judge refused the Tohono O'odham Nation's bid to immediately block construction of 62 miles of new border wall along the reservation's southern boundary with Mexico, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The ruling clears the way for work to continue while litigation proceeds.
State sues owners of Tucson apartment complexes. The state has filed suit against the owners of Tucson apartment complexes, alleging the properties are not properly maintained and failed to meet required air conditioning standards, the Arizona Daily Star reported. The complaint was filed as the region heads into another stretch of extreme heat.
FIFA closes out Pima County contract for less than expected. FIFA made its final payment to Pima County on Thursday for booking county fields as a World Cup training site, but the contract total fell short after the Iranian team's training plans changed, according to Green Valley News. KVOA reported the county received roughly $160,000 in reimbursement and donations.

Armed man barricaded in Marana home. Marana police worked an active barricade situation Friday night in the 6900 block of West Sauceda Drive, near Silverbell Road and Continental Reserve Loop, according to KVOA and KOLD. KOLD reported the man was armed; no resolution had been reported as of late Friday.
Water rescues at Sabino Canyon after monsoon flooding. A 20-year-old cyclist was hospitalized Thursday morning after being knocked into rushing water while trying to ride across a flooded bridge at Sabino Canyon, the Arizona Daily Star reported. KOLD reported bystanders also pulled a family from rushing water at the canyon, with two patients taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Pima Family Advocacy Center opens in midtown. Officials opened the Pima Family Advocacy Center on Friday, consolidating services for domestic violence survivors that had previously been spread across multiple locations. KGUN reported the center follows eight years of collaboration among law enforcement, government and health care agencies in Pima County.

TUSD surveys families on four-day week, year-round calendar. Tucson Unified School District asked families in an email survey over the summer to weigh a four-day school week and a year-round calendar for the 2027-28 school year, Arizona Luminaria reported. The year-round option outlined in the survey would start July 22, 2027, with longer breaks during the year.
Sunnyside breaks ground on new wrestling facility. Sunnyside Unified announced that Sunnyside High School held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a new wrestling room, which the district said begins a project intended to serve future generations of students.

I-10 widening hits halfway mark; Palo Verde interchange closes for good. The Arizona Department of Transportation says its $600 million reconstruction of Interstate 10 between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way has reached the halfway point, KGUN and KOLD reported. KVOA reported the I-10 interchange at Palo Verde Road has now closed permanently as the next phase begins.

RTA launches voter-approved 2026 plan with Irvington repaving. The Regional Transportation Authority and the City of Tucson marked the start of the new voter-approved RTA plan on Aug. 14 with the first project, a repaving of Irvington Road, the agency said in a release.

Community play features domestic violence survivors. Three immigrant survivors of domestic violence will perform monologues drawn from their own experiences in "The Myth of the Perfect Victim," a Tucson community theater production built around the fight, flee or freeze responses to abuse, Arizona Luminaria reported.

Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-CD6). Ciscomani's office said in a release that he wrapped up a district work week focused on "delivering results" for Arizona's Sixth District, which includes parts of the Tucson area.
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.). Kelly said in a release that he criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's response to reported mental health conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and called for sailors to receive immediate help.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.). Gallego posted that he is seeking an official oversight visit with a bipartisan Senate delegation to the USS Lincoln to investigate what he described as alarming reported conditions aboard the ship.

⚠️ Extreme Heat Watch — not yet in effect. The National Weather Service in Tucson has issued an Extreme Heat Watch that begins Monday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. and runs through Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m., covering the Tucson metro area, western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation and parts of Pinal County. Forecasters warn of dangerously hot temperatures of 104 to 109 degrees with Major HeatRisk, noting heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events.
Today: Sunny with a high near 102, heat index up to 100, west-southwest wind 1 to 5 mph. Tonight: partly cloudy, low around 78, west-northwest wind around 5 mph. Sunday: sunny, high near 104, low around 80 overnight.
Outlook: High pressure rebuilds over southern Arizona, shutting down rain chances and pushing highs to 106 Monday and 107 Tuesday, with overnight lows near 82 offering little relief. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Tuesday evening, about a 20% chance. Green Valley and Sahuarita ended the first half of August about a half-inch above normal on rainfall before the drying trend set in, according to Green Valley News.
