Arizona Legislature passes $17.9B GOP budget along party lines; Hobbs veto expected today. The Arizona Senate voted along party lines Monday to approve a $17.9 billion Republican budget package, following the House's party-line vote on April 29. The House is expected to formally transmit the budget to Gov. Katie Hobbs today, who has signaled she will veto it. The GOP plan includes tax cuts conforming with Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," 5% cuts to most state agencies, and tightened work requirements and reporting mandates for SNAP and AHCCCS (Medicaid). More than 420,000 Arizonans — including 180,000 children — have already lost SNAP access since last July; St. Mary's Food Bank reports demand among its 700 partners is up 15% over the past year. After the veto, Republicans and Democrats must negotiate a budget that can achieve bipartisan passage before the June 30 deadline.

VA Secretary Collins tours Oro Valley clinic, defends department amid access concerns. VA Secretary Doug Collins visited an Oro Valley VA clinic Monday with Rep. Juan Ciscomani, defending the department's record after concerns about appointment availability following last year's wave of retirements. Collins said the VA protected more than 300,000 direct patient-care positions while roughly 30,000 staff took early retirement, and that hiring continues. Local veterans' service advocates told KGUN9 the system generally works for those who know how to use it, though at least one veteran said he has had trouble accessing his primary care and mental health providers since the cuts.
