The report also found Arizona fell three spots in teacher pay rankings, with the average salary of $64,291 falling nearly $7,000 short of the national average — and more than $7,000 short of Arizona's own living wage for a single adult with one child.

Her case highlights ongoing concerns about the adequacy of medical care in immigration detention facilities in the region.

Nearly 1 in 3 immigration arrests in Arizona since August classified as "collateral." ICE data analyzed by Stateline shows Arizona is among eight states where at least 30% of immigration arrests were "collateral" — meaning individuals were detained not based on pre-existing warrants but because agents suspected deportability during street sweeps or raids targeting someone else. Fewer than 2% of those arrested this way had violent crime convictions, compared with double that rate for warrant-based arrests.

Federal appeals court blocks nationwide telehealth access to abortion medication. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday blocked a 2023 FDA rule that allowed mifepristone to be prescribed via telehealth and dispensed by mail — a method that accounted for more than 27% of all abortions nationally in the first half of 2025. The ruling affects access for Arizona residents who relied on out-of-state providers under shield laws; the FDA could seek emergency Supreme Court relief.

Six local muralists selected to transform Tucson's Mosaic Quarter. The Mosaic Quarter sports and entertainment district has commissioned six Tucson-based artists to paint large-scale murals throughout the venue. Tohono O'odham youth name Southern Arizona ocelot "Himdam." A rare wild ocelot documented roaming southern Arizona — only the second confirmed in the state in decades — now has an official name: Himdam, the O'odham word for "traveler," chosen by Tohono O'odham youth through a naming contest. The naming connects the endangered cat's wide borderlands range to local Indigenous language and identity.

Oracle Road fossil co-op opens doors for inaugural Spring Showcase, May 8–10. The Co-op, Mineral and Fossil Galleries at 1635 N. Oracle Road will hold its first Spring Showcase Friday through Sunday (9 a.m.–5 p.m.), with four dealer-members showing museum-quality dinosaur fossils, trilobites, minerals, and meteorites — plus three local artists and a food truck. Admission is free.
