Arizona inmate dies days after large prison fight. An inmate has died following what officials described as a "sizable" fight at an Arizona prison, an incident that also left at least nine others hospitalized. Officials have declined to classify the incident as a riot. The prison and the identities of those involved have not been publicly released.

A fourth UA fraternity is suspended for hazing this semester. The University of Arizona's Dean of Students Office placed Sigma Phi Epsilon on activities suspension April 29 following allegations that new members were subjected to sleep deprivation, kidnapping, forced calisthenics, and forced alcohol consumption during the fall 2025 semester. Sigma Phi Epsilon is now the fourth UA fraternity to face disciplinary action this spring — Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi, and Phi Delta Theta have all faced suspension or loss of recognition in recent weeks.

Arizona, California, and Nevada announce joint plan to stabilize the Colorado River. The three states have put forward a proposal to save at least 3.2 million acre-feet of Colorado River water through 2028. The announcement signals renewed state-level cooperation on the river's long-term health ahead of ongoing federal renegotiation of operating guidelines.

TUSD governing board formally begins school closure review. The Tucson Unified School District board has launched a months-long process to evaluate potential school closures and consolidations, laying out a timeline that includes community input, data analysis, and eventual board action. No specific schools have been named for closure yet.

Sen. Kelly pushes back on GOP effort to end mail voting in Arizona. In a post Saturday, Sen. Mark Kelly said Washington Republicans are trying to eliminate Arizona's mail-in voting system, which has been in use for over 30 years and is used by a majority of voters across party lines. Kelly called the effort "wrong, plain and simple," framing it as an attempt to make voting harder.

Six local artists commissioned to transform Mosaic Quarter with murals. The Mosaic Quarter sports and entertainment venue has selected six Tucson muralists to create large-scale art throughout the facility, fulfilling a founding vision to integrate art and athletics. The artists and their designs have not yet been publicly announced.

New wellness tea café and 24-hour gym open in Oro Valley. Bloom Tea Wellness has opened in Oro Valley, offering a community gathering space centered on tea and wellness. Separately, a new round-the-clock gym has also opened in the area, expanding fitness access for north Tucson residents.

Hot Dogs 501 wins Tucson's inaugural Sonoran Dog Showdown. Five Westside restaurants — Hot Dogs 501, Rollies West, Gordo Dogs, Whatadogo, and At Ease Cookz — competed Saturday at a community event judged by both a panel and hundreds of attendees. Hot Dogs 501, whose owner Luis Nolasco said he makes everything "with love," took the title of best Sonoran dog in Tucson.

Tohono O'odham youth name rare southern Arizona ocelot. The wild ocelot that has been documented roaming southern Arizona now has a name: Himdam, the O'odham word for "traveler," chosen by Tohono O'odham youth. The ocelot is among a small number that occasionally cross into Arizona from Mexico, representing one of the rarest big cat sightings in the U.S.

Two UA professors named 2026 Guggenheim Fellows. A pair of University of Arizona professors were among more than 200 scholars selected as Guggenheim Fellows by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation this week. The prestigious annual grant supports artists and scientists pursuing new projects and scholarship.

"Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors," a gender-bending comedic reimagination of the gothic classic by Gordon Greenberg and Steven Rosen, is now running at Arizona Theatre Company.
