Late-night fire burns 3 to 4 acres in Catalina Foothills; contained. A fire in the Catalina Foothills area burned 3 to 4 acres overnight before crews contained it. No structures were reported damaged.

Oro Valley use tax returns to town council for second vote. A first-ever Oro Valley use tax — approved 4-3 by the Town Council in January — is coming back before the governing board for a second vote. The tax applies to goods purchased outside Arizona for use in the town.
Arizona veterans rally at state Capitol for War Powers Resolution on Iran. Members of VetsForward gathered at the Arizona State Capitol Thursday urging Congressional Republicans to back a Senate War Powers Resolution that would limit President Trump's authority to conduct further military operations against Iran without congressional authorization. The Senate voted 50-47 to advance the measure earlier this week; 13 U.S. service members have been killed in the conflict.
DHS disputes Arizona lawmakers' accounts of Mesa ICE facility conditions. The Department of Homeland Security accused Reps. Yassamin Ansari and Greg Stanton of lying about conditions at the Arizona Removal Operations Coordination Center at Mesa Gateway Airport, denying reports of overcrowding and overflowing toilets. ICE's own FOIA data shows the 157-person capacity facility has averaged 274 detainees daily in 2026, with a single-day peak of 777 — and average stays of 36 hours versus the 12-hour limit. Both lawmakers said DHS's denials contradict what immigration agents at the facility told them directly.

Private equity now owns nearly 1 in 4 Arizona apartment units. A Private Equity Stakeholder Project analysis finds Arizona among the top 10 states for private equity-owned rental housing, with firms owning nearly 1 in 4 apartment units statewide — the majority acquired since 2018. Arizona was also among states with the steepest increases in cost-burdened renters spending more than 30% of income on housing.

South Tucson's Louis Market reopens as community-owned cultural center. The Southwest Folklife Alliance and Regeneración have transformed the historic Louis Market, a former Chinese grocery store at 4001 S. 12th Ave., into a Center for Cultural Organizing. The space will host events, pop-up markets, and skills-sharing workshops. Organizers plan to transfer ownership to the community through the La Doce Community Land Trust within three to five years, with a focus on countering displacement and building shade and green space equity on the south side.
Pima County pools open for summer; free admission this weekend. Pima County aquatic facilities opened for the 2026 season in time for Memorial Day weekend, with free admission available. Details on pool locations and hours are available through Pima County Parks and Recreation.
