⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — in effect now through 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3. The National Weather Service in Tucson issued the warning at 3:17 a.m. today, calling for dangerously hot conditions with highs of 107 to 113 across the Tucson metro area, western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Upper Santa Cruz River Valley/Altar Valley, and 101 to 106 in Santa Cruz and Cochise counties. Major to extreme HeatRisk is expected, with heat-related illnesses increasing significantly and warm overnight lows offering little relief.
Today: mostly sunny and dangerously hot, high near 111, with heat index values as high as 109 and a slight (20%) chance of rain showers between 8 and 11 a.m. East-southeast winds of 1 to 10 mph, gusting to 21 mph. Tonight: partly cloudy, low around 84. Sunday: sunny, high near 110, low around 83.
Outlook: The extreme heat holds through Monday, when highs near 109 come with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Storm chances increase to 40% Tuesday as highs ease to around 105. Overnight lows in the 80s mean limited recovery from daytime heat through the weekend.

Sheriff's investigators release contents of Guthrie ransom notes at six-month mark. The Pima County Sheriff's Department released the contents of notes sent to Nancy Guthrie's family and said it believes the suspect planned the 84-year-old's abduction from her Catalina Foothills home, according to KOLD. One note claims Guthrie died shortly after the abduction, AZPM reported; Friday marked six months since she was last seen after being dropped off at her home near Skyline and Campbell.

Men detained in Guthrie case file $3.25 million claim against sheriff's department. A Rio Rico man arrested and questioned in February in connection with Guthrie's disappearance, along with two family members, has filed notices of claim seeking a combined $3.25 million, alleging they were wrongfully detained and that the Pima County Sheriff's Department's work was shoddy, according to the Arizona Daily Star and Green Valley News. The man's individual claim seeks $2.5 million; a notice of claim is a precursor to a lawsuit and the county has not responded publicly.

Tucson House tenants report asbestos concerns during renovations. Residents of the midtown affordable housing high-rise told KGUN 9 that dust from ongoing renovation work is making them sick and that mail deliveries have been paused. Construction managers said they are working with environmental consultants daily, according to the station.

Federal Colorado River plan would cut Arizona's share; Tucson Water says supply is resilient. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on Friday released its final environmental impact statement for post-2026 operations of Lake Powell and Lake Mead, proposing that Arizona, California and Nevada absorb reductions while sparing the four upper basin states from mandatory cuts for now. Arizona Mirror reported the plan could mean cuts of up to 77% to Arizona's share, which the state Department of Water Resources said would devastate water users and the economy; KOLD reported farmers are bracing for losses. The City of Tucson said in a release that Tucson Water is reviewing the document and that the city's supply remains resilient for years to come.

First statewide heat safety rules now cover Arizona outdoor workers. Arizona's first statewide outdoor heat safety standards now require employers to provide water, shade and rest on job sites, KOLD reported. The rules take effect as the Tucson area enters an extreme heat warning with highs above 110.
Pima County maps heat-vulnerable neighborhoods. County officials described ongoing efforts to identify areas most exposed to extreme temperatures and target mitigation, KVOA reported. The mapping work is part of a broader county heat response as high temperatures persist.
Biggs names Sine Kerr for lieutenant governor; Hobbs declines debate. Republican gubernatorial nominee Andy Biggs selected former state Sen. TUSD budget relies on new override, raising district property tax rate. Tucson Unified's $797.4 million budget for fiscal 2027 depends on voter authorization of a new $45 million budget override, which would raise the district's property tax rate from $5.62 to $6.38 per $100,000 of assessed valuation, according to Tucson Spotlight's Spanish-language report.
Families speak out after state finds ASDB violated federal special education law. Families from the Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind gathered after a state finding that the school violated federal special education law, KVOA reported. The station reported the families are pressing for changes at the Tucson-based school.
U of A pulls fraternity recognition, expands hazing prevention. The University of Arizona removed recognition of a fraternity over hazing allegations, AZPM reported. The university separately announced expanded campuswide hazing prevention initiatives, saying several efforts were already underway as part of its student safety work.

Grant Road underpass reopens after months-long project. Grant Road between the Interstate 10 westbound frontage road and Flowing Wells Road reopened to traffic at 4 a.m. today following major improvements at the Union Pacific Railroad underpass, the city said in a release. Crews will remain in the area through the end of August completing final work.
Pascua Yaqui casino on Tucson's west side nears completion. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is set to open its new west-side casino in November, the Arizona Daily Star reported.
Local group seeks to take over Old Tucson lease. A local group is pursuing the lease for Old Tucson after American Heritage Railways said it would not extend its own, according to KOLD. The attraction's future operator has not been determined.
