⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — in effect now through 8 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service in Tucson issued the warning at 2:41 a.m. today for the Tucson metro area, western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation and surrounding zones, citing highs of 107 to 112 and Major to Extreme HeatRisk. Overnight lows of 84 to 90 in some areas offer little relief, and NWS warns heat-related illness rises sharply during events like this.
Today: Sunny and dangerously hot, high near 110, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Southwest wind 2 to 10 mph; heat index as high as 109. Tonight: Partly cloudy, low around 82, with patchy blowing dust and a slight chance of storms before 8 p.m. South-southeast wind 3 to 21 mph, gusting to 31 mph. Monday: Mostly sunny, high near 108, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms and patchy blowing dust in the afternoon and evening.
Outlook: Monsoon moisture increases early in the week as temperatures ease slightly — near 105 Tuesday and 104 Wednesday, each with a 30% chance of late-day storms. Blowing dust ahead of outflow winds is the main hazard Sunday night into Monday night. Overnight lows stay near 80, limiting recovery from daytime heat.

Federal Colorado River plan could sharply cut Central Arizona Project deliveries. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation released its Final Environmental Impact Statement for post-2026 operations of Lake Powell and Lake Mead, laying out a path to drastically reduce deliveries to the CAP canal that supplies drinking water to Tucson and Phoenix if the river stays low. The City of Tucson said in a release that Tucson Water is reviewing the document and that the city's supply "remains resilient," while Arizona farmers told KOLD they are bracing for significant losses in crop production.

Corporation Commission approves TEP power line to Sahuarita area. The Arizona Corporation Commission approved a new Tucson Electric Power transmission line running from Tucson's southeast side to the Sahuarita area, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The approval came over objections from a conservation group that argued the line would primarily benefit a neighboring copper mine.
Incumbent loses LD21 House primary. State Rep. Stephanie Stahl Hamilton was defeated in the Democratic primary for the Legislative District 21 House seats, losing to Miranda Lopez by 8,677 to 8,395, the Nogales International reported. Lopez will join Rep. Consuelo Hernandez on the general election ballot; Maritza Higuera finished fourth with 6,976 votes.

Sheriff's department releases ransom notes as Guthrie case hits six months. The Pima County Sheriff's Department released two ransom notes connected to the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, saying the writer's wording and "unique linguistic style" could be crucial to identifying a suspect. Sheriff Chris Nanos and Guthrie's daughter, NBC's Savannah Guthrie, issued separate statements marking six months since Guthrie was last seen at her Catalina Foothills home near Skyline and Campbell; AZPM reported one note claims she died shortly after being abducted.

Deputies searching for missing 66-year-old woman. The Pima County Sheriff's Department is asking for public help locating Debra Esarey, 66, who may have a medical condition affecting her cognitive ability. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's department.
Three seriously injured in I-19 rollover. Three people were taken to a Tucson-area trauma center after a vehicle rolled over on southbound Interstate 19 between Continental and Canoa roads around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. All three sustained serious injuries, according to responding crews.

State finds Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind violated federal special education law. Families of ASDB students gathered to speak out after the state's finding, KVOA reported. The Tucson-based school serves students from across Arizona.
U of A expands hazing prevention initiatives. The University of Arizona announced additional campuswide hazing prevention measures, saying several efforts were already underway and will now be expanded. The university framed the changes as part of a broader commitment to student safety and accountability.

Pascua Yaqui casino on west side nears completion. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is set to open its new casino on Tucson's west side in November, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
Grant Road underpass reopens after months-long project. Grant Road between the I-10 westbound frontage road and Flowing Wells Road reopened to traffic at 4 a.m. Saturday following major improvements tied to the Grant Road Underpass at the Union Pacific Railroad project. The city said crews will remain in the area through the end of August to finish remaining work.
Local group seeks to take over Old Tucson lease. A local group is pursuing the lease at Old Tucson after American Heritage Railways announced it would not extend its agreement, KOLD reported. The Pima County-owned film set and attraction has changed operators multiple times in recent years.

Sun Tran route and service changes begin Aug. 16. Sun Tran, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle will implement service and route changes starting Sunday, Aug. 16, the transit agency said. Riders are encouraged to check schedules before the changes take effect.
