⚠️ FLOOD WATCH — begins 11 a.m. today, in effect through late Sunday night (until 5 a.m. Monday). The National Weather Service says flash flooding from excessive rainfall is possible across the Tucson metro area, the Tohono O'odham Nation, southeast Pinal County, the Santa Cruz and Altar valleys, and the Catalina, Rincon, Santa Rita, Baboquivari, Huachuca, Dragoon and Mule mountains. Low-water crossings may flood and runoff may affect creeks, washes and poor-drainage areas.
⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — in effect until 8 p.m. today, with highs of 104 to 110 and overnight lows of 79 to 85 across Pima and Pinal counties, western Pima County and the Tohono O'odham Nation. NWS rates the heat risk as major to extreme today.
Today: mostly sunny with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m., a high near 106 falling to about 102 in the afternoon, heat index up to 106, and south-southwest wind of 1 to 9 mph. Tonight: mostly cloudy, a 50% chance of storms, low around 77, south-southeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Sunday: high near 100 with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms, becoming likely into Sunday night with a low around 73.
Outlook: The pattern turns wetter and cooler through the start of the week, with storms likely Monday and a high near 96, then a drier Tuesday near 98 with only a slight chance of afternoon storms. Rain falling on already-saturated ground is the main flooding concern through Sunday night.

Deputy union says fugitive in recruit's killing was located days before arrest. As we reported this week, court records indicate the shooting of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez was random. The Arizona Daily Star reports that a deputies' union says one suspect fled after the Pima County Sheriff's Department declined requests to contain his location pending approval of a SWAT-equipped arrest warrant, and that he was arrested days later. Funeral services for Ramirez were held Friday, according to KVOA.

Former Davis-Monthan airman pleads guilty in child-sex case. Karl Alexander Streets, a former Tucson airman, pleaded guilty to multiple child-sex counts after investigators said he attempted to pay for what he believed would be sexual contact with a 6-year-old, according to reports. He was originally charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 15.

U of A library stabbing suspect takes plea deal. The man accused of stabbing his girlfriend multiple times inside the University of Arizona's Main Library last year pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and kidnapping, KVOA and KOLD report. He was ordered held in custody until sentencing, set for Oct. 12.
Resident dies in midtown house fire. A resident and two dogs died in a house fire near North First Avenue and East Prince Road on Wednesday, Aug. 26, according to KOLD.

Judge again freezes Trump mail-voting rule; administration appeals. A federal judge issued a two-week order late Thursday blocking a U.S. Postal Service regulation restricting mail-in voting, finding it infringed on states' constitutional power to run elections — a rule that would have changed how Arizona voters return ballots before November. The Trump administration filed Friday to appeal the order to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Grijalva asks federal government to halt border wall work on tribal land. Following reports we covered Thursday that masked CBP agents escorted border-wall contractors onto the Tohono O'odham Nation on Aug. 25, Rep. Adelita Grijalva called on the federal government to stop border wall construction on tribal lands, AZPM reports. The Nation has opposed wall construction along its stretch of the international boundary.

Tucson School for the Blind cleared to enroll public school students. The Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind's Tucson campus has received state approval to take in public school students, AZPM reports, a change that would open the school to families beyond its current enrollment pathway.
Trico details August outages that hit Marana High School. Trico Electric Cooperative provided an accounting of four power outages this month affecting Marana High School and surrounding areas, KVOA reports.

Downtown tech hub planned at historic Roy Place Building. A new hub near Stone Avenue and Broadway is intended to boost jobs and technology growth, bringing together local and Taiwanese partners, according to KVOA.
Tucson Water to mark completion of TARP expansion, new PFAS treatment plant. The city announced in a release that Tucson Water will hold a ribbon cutting for the expanded Tucson Airport Remediation Project and a new PFAS treatment facility, describing the work as a federal, state and local groundwater remediation and drinking-water protection investment.
U of A moving ahead with sale of Al-Marah Equine Center. The University of Arizona is proceeding with the sale of its equine center property on Bear Canyon Road, KVOA reports.

Pima County arts groups land state grants. Local arts organizations will receive roughly $621,000 from the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of a $2.66 million statewide granting program, the Arizona Daily Star reports.
