Tucson's draft Safe City Action Plan draws funding questions ahead of adoption vote. The Tucson City Council reviewed a draft of the plan, which addresses homelessness, mental health and public safety, according to Tucson Spotlight, which reported that questions about how the work would be paid for remain unresolved before the council takes an adoption vote.
Justice Department sues Arizona over in-state tuition for undocumented students. The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday sued Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington over laws allowing immigrants without legal status to pay in-state college tuition, a challenge to Proposition 308, which Arizona voters approved in 2022. Attorney General Kris Mayes called the lawsuit "baseless," according to Arizona Mirror.

Romero announces reelection bid at Tucson mayors' panel. Mayor Regina Romero announced she will seek reelection, Tucson Spotlight reported, during a Tucson panel at which Arizona mayors and vice mayors discussed gender and racial bias in politics.
🚨 Public Safety
Fifth inmate death since June reported at Pima County jail. A 40-year-old woman died at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on the evening of Aug. 26, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, and an investigation is underway. KOLD reports it is the fifth inmate death at the facility since June 11.
Thursday night storm floods streets, topples tree onto cars downtown. Monsoon storms flooded streets and uprooted a large tree at Armory Park that crushed vehicles, KVOA reported. Nearly 2,000 Tucson Electric Power customers lost service after the storm moved through, according to the station.
Banner Health warns of Valley fever risk during monsoon activity. Banner Health officials are urging Southern Arizonans to watch for Valley fever symptoms as monsoon winds and dust stir up the soil-borne fungus, AZPM reported.

TUSD superintendent puts a number on possible closures: six to 10 schools. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo said Thursday the district is targeting six to 10 schools for phased consolidation or closure, though he said he is "not certain" closures will ultimately be recommended, KVOA reported; KOLD reported he also outlined the criteria the district will use. As we reported Wednesday, the TUSD governing board narrowly approved the closure and consolidation engagement plan earlier this week.
Arizona kindergarten vaccination rates hit decade low. Kindergarten vaccination rates in Arizona have fallen to their lowest level in at least a decade, KOLD reported, and Tucson-area health experts told the station they are concerned about the effect of a new executive order.

City partners with Local First Arizona on sustainable economy initiative. The City of Tucson and Local First Arizona said in a news release they are advancing a shared plan, through a partnership with the Urban Institute, to grow the region's sustainable economy, support local businesses and prepare Southern Arizona's workforce.
Federal energy official tours U of A mining lab in Sahuarita. A federal assistant secretary of energy visited the University of Arizona's underground mining laboratory in Sahuarita this week as part of a new initiative aimed at moving more graduates into the U.S. mining workforce, the Arizona Daily Star reported.

Flowing Wells senior lunch program saved after funding lapse. A decades-old senior lunch program in Flowing Wells will continue after community fundraising and a UnitedHealthcare grant replaced funding that abruptly dried up, according to Tucson Spotlight.
Harkins at Tucson Spectrum to screen Dolly Parton films for $6. The theater will show "Steel Magnolias" and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" this weekend, with proceeds going to Parton's Imagination Library, KOLD reported. AMC theaters nationwide are running the same two titles beginning Friday, according to KGUN 9.

⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — issued at 4:43 a.m. today and in effect now through 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. The National Weather Service warns of dangerously hot conditions, with highs of 104 to 110 and overnight lows of 79 to 85 across the Tucson metro area, Pinal County, the Tohono O'odham Nation, western Pima County and the Upper Gila River Valley. Major to Extreme HeatRisk is expected through Saturday, and heat-related illnesses increase significantly during these events.
Today: mostly sunny with a high near 107 and a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m.; south-southwest wind 2 to 7 mph. Tonight: mostly cloudy, low around 80, with a 40% chance of showers and storms. Saturday: mostly sunny, high near 105 with temperatures falling to around 101 in the afternoon, and showers and thunderstorms likely later in the day (60%).
