Tribal leaders say masked federal agents and border-wall contractors entered Tohono O'odham land. Tohono O'odham Nation leaders said more than a dozen federal agents and private border-wall contractors entered the Nation this week to begin pre-construction work despite the tribe's objections, and that Border Patrol agents — including a SWAT team — blocked tribal police from issuing trespassing citations and removing the workers Tuesday, according to Arizona Mirror. The confrontation comes amid the Trump administration's push to build 30-foot barriers along the Nation's southern boundary with Mexico. Federal agencies' response was not detailed in the reports.

Court records indicate shooting of police recruit was random. The two suspects arrested in the shooting that killed Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez and wounded his fiancée had no known connection to either victim, according to court records reviewed by the Arizona Daily Star. As we reported Tuesday, the final suspect in the case surrendered after an eastside SWAT operation.

State law would drop voters from automatic mail-ballot list starting 2027. Hundreds of thousands of Arizona voters could be removed from the state's automatic mail ballot list under a state law set to take effect in 2027, the Arizona Daily Star reports. The change would affect how Pima County voters receive ballots in future elections.
Grijalva and Butierez clash on ICE, voting laws in CD7 debate. The two candidates for Arizona's 7th Congressional District debated immigration enforcement, the role of ICE and election law in a forum held Wednesday, as we previewed yesterday. The Republican candidate said he supports changes to mail-in voting proposed by President Donald Trump, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

CD6 candidates set to debate Sept. 10. Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani and Democrat JoAnna Mendoza are scheduled to meet in a debate at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, according to Green Valley News.
Colorado River cuts could reach local water bills. Arizona will take the largest reduction among three states under a finalized federal plan to cut Colorado River water use through 2028, a change KOLD reports could push up water bills. AZPM reports Nevada has gone to court over the river's allocations while Arizona is still weighing its options.
Oro Valley's incoming mayor outlines priorities. Melanie Barrett, who has served eight years as vice mayor, will be sworn in as Oro Valley's next mayor and told Tucson Spotlight her focus is public safety, fiscal growth and sustainability.

Student arrested after machete found at Marana High School. Marana police said a student was arrested Wednesday after a machete in a backpack was intercepted before it reached campus, according to KOLD. School officials told KVOA the student had forgotten the item was in the bag.
FCC weighing cuts that KOLD reports would cost Tucson schools and libraries millions. The FCC is considering changes to the E-Rate program, which for nearly 30 years has helped schools and libraries pay for high-speed internet. KOLD reports the potential cuts would cost Tucson-area institutions millions of dollars.

Final paving on Grant Road begins Monday. Final paving work on the Phase 3 and 4 segment of the voter-approved Grant Road Improvement Project is set to begin Monday, KVOA reports. KOLD reports the phases are on track for completion in October.
Chihuahuan restaurant and tortilleria opening in Tucson. A Phoenix restaurant couple with a trio of James Beard Award nominations is opening what could be Tucson's first Chihuahuan-style Mexican restaurant and tortilleria this week, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

Soundquest Festival returns to Tucson. The experimental music festival's lineup spans Tuvan throat singing, doom metal, electronic sets and jazz, according to a guide published by Tucson Local Media.

Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-CD7). Grijalva and Tohono O'odham Nation Chairman Verlon Jose said in a joint release that they condemn federal agents' entry onto sovereign tribal lands.

⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — issued at 2:06 a.m. today and in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. NWS Tucson warns of dangerously hot conditions with highs of 104 to 110 and lows of 79 to 85 across the Tucson metro area, Pinal County, the Tohono O'odham Nation, western Pima County and the Upper Gila River Valley, with major to extreme HeatRisk today through Saturday. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during these events.
Today: mostly sunny, high near 108, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and north winds of 1 to 7 mph. Tonight: partly cloudy, low around 82, with a slight chance of storms before 11 p.m. Friday: sunny and 108 again, with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m.
Storm chances build through the weekend as the heat slowly eases — Saturday tops out near 105 with a 50% chance of storms, and Sunday drops to about 100 with storms likely and a 70% chance of rain. Overnight lows stay in the upper 70s to low 80s through Saturday night, offering little relief.
