Federal plans would expand I-19 Border Patrol checkpoint despite local opposition. The Arizona Daily Star reports federal officials plan to convert the temporary Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 19 near Amado into a substantially larger permanent facility, and has published a breakdown of five key points about the proposal. According to the Star, the plan has drawn opposition from local residents and officials in the Santa Cruz Valley corridor south of Tucson.
Jon Post sworn in as Marana mayor. Post took the oath of office as mayor of the Town of Marana on Aug. 17 following the July primary election, with Town Clerk Jill McCleary administering the oath, Tucson Local Media reported. The swearing-in ceremony formalized the results of the town's summer election.

Grijalva and Butierez set for CD7 debate tonight. Democratic Rep. Adelita Grijalva and Republican Daniel Butierez are scheduled to debate at 6 p.m. today in a rematch for Arizona's 7th Congressional District, according to Arizona Luminaria, which is carrying a live stream and replay. Voters elected Grijalva in a September 2025 special election to complete her father's term.

Pima County deputies made 16 hiker rescues over the weekend amid extreme heat. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said the weekend total was higher than usual and warned hikers about the consequences of being caught out in the heat, KOLD reported. The rescues came during an ongoing stretch of triple-digit temperatures across the region.
Detainees allege continuing abuses in Tucson-area immigration custody. Tucson Spotlight reports that migrant testimony and new inspection reports describe conditions in ICE and Border Patrol detention in Tucson that persist a decade after a lawsuit forced federal changes. The outlet's reporting is based on detainee accounts and inspection documents.
ICE arrests in Arizona hit a four-year high in July. Immigration authorities arrested 2,171 people statewide in July 2026, more than in any month in the previous four years, according to data visualized by the Deportation Data Project and reported by Arizona Luminaria. For comparison, the outlet reports 328 people were arrested in July 2023.

TUSD board narrowly approves closure and consolidation engagement plan. As we reported Tuesday, the Tucson Unified School District governing board took up the plan this week; the board voted 3-2 to adopt a community engagement process for discussing possible school closures, consolidations and grade reconfigurations. Some members raised concerns about representation and the pace of the process, and no individual schools have been identified, according to reports.

Student arrested after gun brought to Alice Vail Middle School. The Tucson Police Department said a student brought a firearm onto the campus of the TUSD middle school on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and was arrested, KOLD reported. No injuries were reported.

Casino Del Sol to open new property this fall. Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa'am is scheduled to open later this fall, adding to the company's gaming and hospitality properties in Southern Arizona, Tucson Local Media reported. The outlet reports the site holds cultural significance.

Sun Link streetcar returns to full frequency after year-long repair. Streetcar 105 is back in service a year after a crash took it out of the fleet, restoring Sun Link's original 10-to-12-minute headways, according to Tucson Spotlight. The repairs were described as extensive.
U of A awarded more than $30 million for trauma blood transfusion study. The University of Arizona will receive over $30 million to study whether giving blood transfusions to trauma patients before they reach a hospital saves lives, KVOA reported. The research targets pre-hospital care for severely injured patients.

Foundation raises $12,000 for family of slain police recruit. The Erik Hite Foundation has raised $12,000 for the family of Tucson police cadet Carlos Ramirez one week after his killing, KGUN 9 reported. The foundation supports families of fallen and injured public safety officers.

⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — issued at 2:02 a.m. today and in effect now through 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. The National Weather Service in Tucson warns of dangerously hot conditions with highs of 104 to 111 and overnight lows of 79 to 85 across the Tucson metro area, Western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation, Pinal County and the Upper Gila River Valley. Forecasters cite Major to Extreme HeatRisk through Saturday, with heat-related illnesses increasing significantly during such events.
Today: Sunny and 110, with heat index values as high as 107 and west-southwest wind of 1 to 6 mph. Tonight: partly cloudy, low around 82. Thursday: sunny and 109, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m.
Outlook: Storm chances build slowly into the weekend even as the heat holds — Friday reaches about 108 with a 40% chance of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Saturday cools slightly to near 105 with a 60% chance of storms, and the heat warning expires at 8 p.m. that day.
