Final suspect in Tucson police recruit's killing surrenders after eastside SWAT operation. Alex James Barnett, the third suspect sought in last week's fatal shooting of 23-year-old Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, was taken into custody Monday night after a large SWAT operation near Broadway Boulevard and Camino Seco, Sheriff Chris Nanos said; no one was injured. As we reported Sunday, two other suspects had already been arrested. A court filing says Ramirez was fighting home intruders when he was shot at his southwest-side home, where his fiancée was also wounded.

Supreme Court clears way for federal mail-in ballot restrictions; Fontes objects. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower-court block on President Donald Trump's executive order on mail-in ballots, allowing the administration to move ahead roughly two months before the November midterms, according to Arizona Mirror. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes criticized the unsigned emergency-docket decision, the Arizona Daily Star reported; the vast majority of Pima County voters cast ballots by mail.

City officials tout transit safety measures. Tucson leaders outlined what they described as progress on transit safety and security, including road safety investments and a new transit ambassador program, KOLD News 13 reported. The officials laid out the plan at a briefing; the station reported the claims of improvement without independent verification of outcomes.
Proposed Head Start changes draw concern from Arizona providers. Parents and providers say proposed federal changes to Head Start could put vulnerable Arizona families at risk, AZPM reported, with advocates arguing that families need a broader "ecosystem of support" beyond preschool hours. The program has served low-income families in Arizona for decades.
Gates Pass Road partially closed for storm repairs. Pima County has closed a stretch of Gates Pass Road east of Kinney Road to repair pavement damage caused by recent storms, according to KOLD News 13. Drivers heading to the west side should plan alternate routes.

TUSD board to take up school closure and consolidation plan Tuesday. The Tucson Unified School District governing board is scheduled to discuss its plan for closing and consolidating schools amid declining enrollment at its Aug. 25 meeting, Arizona Luminaria reported. Details are expected in a presentation titled "Reimagining Our Schools Together," part of the district's enrollment stabilization program, according to the agenda.
Marana Unified announces free pre-K pilot at Roadrunner Elementary. The district announced it is launching a Kinder-Ready Pre-K pilot this school year, expanding to two classrooms and 36 students with tuition fully covered by scholarship, according to a post on its website.

U of A closes four dorms as enrollment falls. The University of Arizona has taken three dorms offline for the 2026-27 academic year and permanently removed a fourth from its official housing website, the Arizona Daily Star reported, as the university expects a smaller incoming class. The fall semester began Monday, with President Suresh Garimella saying undergraduate tuition and mandatory fees will stay flat for a third consecutive year.

Tribe, conservation groups sue over proposed copper mine near Mammoth. The San Carlos Apache Tribe and two conservation groups are suing federal regulators over a proposed copper mine in a desert riparian area northeast of Tucson that is used by endangered owls, according to the Arizona Daily Star. The suit targets the federal approval process for the project.

Tucson's new Pima Family Advocacy Center brings law enforcement, legal aid, therapy and victim services under one roof for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, according to Tucson Spotlight. The model is intended to reduce the number of places survivors must go to get help.
Tucson Dreamers facing deportation call for federal protections. Three Tucson Dreamers facing deportation shared their stories at a rally, joined by the mayor and members of Congress who called for federal protections, Tucson Spotlight reported in its Spanish-language coverage.
Storytellers with disabilities to headline debut Aug. 29 event. Four Tucson storytellers with intellectual and developmental disabilities are scheduled to share personal stories of bravery at a new public event Aug. 29, presented by Tucson Spotlight and AZPM.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (U.S. senator). Gallego announced he met with local leaders, parents and providers in Phoenix to push back on what his office described as the Trump administration's cuts to health care and Head Start.
Sen. Mark Kelly (U.S. senator). In a release flagging a KTAR interview, Kelly said the administration is targeting military families and business owners for deportation rather than people with criminal records.

⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — in effect now, issued at 1:51 a.m. today and continuing until 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. The National Weather Service warns of dangerously hot conditions across the Tucson metro area, Western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation, Pinal County and the Upper Gila River Valley, with highs of 103 to 111 and overnight lows of 79 to 85. Major HeatRisk is expected today, with widespread Major to Extreme HeatRisk Wednesday through Saturday, and heat-related illness rises significantly during these events.
Today: sunny, high near 108, heat index up to 106, west wind 1 to 8 mph. Tonight: mostly clear, low around 82, west-northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Wednesday: sunny and hotter, high near 109, low around 83.
Outlook: Thursday is forecast to be the peak, near 110, with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Storm chances rise to 40% Friday afternoon and evening as highs ease slightly to about 108. Overnight lows in the low 80s will offer little relief through the warning period.
