⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING — in effect since 3 a.m. today, continuing until 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. The National Weather Service in Tucson warns of dangerously hot conditions across the Tucson metro area, western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation, Pinal County and the Upper Gila River Valley, with highs of 103 to 111 and overnight lows of 79 to 85. Forecasters expect Major HeatRisk through Tuesday, then widespread Major to Extreme HeatRisk Wednesday through Saturday; heat-related illnesses increase significantly during events like this.
Today: mostly sunny with a high near 105 and a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m.; heat index values as high as 105, with west-northwest winds of 2 to 8 mph. Tonight: mostly clear, low around 81, with a slight chance of storms before 8 p.m. Tuesday: sunny, high near 108.
Outlook: the heat builds midweek, with Wednesday near 110 and Thursday near 109, and only isolated afternoon storm chances to break it up. Overnight storms also prompted a short-lived flash flood warning for north-central Pima and southwestern Pinal counties that expired at 1:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Daily Star. Additional storm days could bring brief downpours and gusty winds without meaningfully cooling the pattern.

Second arrest in fatal shooting during gun-sale meetup. A second teenager has been arrested in the shooting death of 33-year-old Eddie Lopez Jr., which court records describe as occurring during a gun-sale meetup, according to the Arizona Daily Star and KVOA. Both suspects now face charges in the case.

Arrest made in Aug. 19 midtown stabbing death. Tucson police arrested a suspect Saturday in the stabbing death of a man in midtown Tucson on Aug. 19, the Arizona Daily Star reported. Friday's brief noted an Aug. 19 death near the University of Arizona campus that police said was caused by stab wounds.
Man lying in roadway killed near I-10 and Craycroft. A 51-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle late Saturday night while lying on the Interstate 10 frontage road at Craycroft, Tucson police said. KOLD reported the man was known to live in an encampment in the area.

Fire at eastside treatment center under investigation. A fire broke out at Circle Tree Ranch, a recovery and treatment center on Tucson's east side, and the cause is under investigation, according to KVOA.
Man wounded in apparent drive-by shooting dies. The victim of what Pima County sheriff's deputies described as an apparent drive-by shooting near Cardinal Avenue and Bilby Road has died days after the incident, KOLD reported. The investigation is continuing.

Former Nogales mayor's probation ends with restitution largely unpaid. Former Nogales Mayor Octavio Garcia Von Borstel has completed his probation after paying about 9% of a court-ordered restitution balance of $467,525.67, the Nogales International reported. The balance remains outstanding.

Canadian tariffs could push up some Arizona grocery prices. New 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods took effect Aug. 19, and the Arizona Daily Star reports the levies could raise costs on a range of grocery items sold in Arizona stores.
U of A incubator ranked among nation's best. The University of Arizona said TIME Magazine ranked its Center for Innovation No. 6 among public university-affiliated incubators and No. 56 overall in a list published last week. The center supports early-stage science and technology companies.

St. Jude Dream Home tickets sell out in Tucson. Tickets for this year's St. Jude Dream Home giveaway in Tucson have sold out, according to KOLD, which partners on the fundraiser benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Ice cream truck owner works low-income neighborhoods during the heat. KGUN 9 profiled Sweet Tooth owner Matthew Lenne, who says he serves lower-income Tucson neighborhoods and makes sure no child leaves without a treat.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (U.S. senator). Gallego said in a post that he met with parents and providers about Head Start, which he said thousands of Arizona working families rely on, and said he is fighting to preserve the program amid what he described as a Trump administration move to gut it.
Sen. Mark Kelly (U.S. senator). Kelly said in a post that Arizona is "leading the charge" in bringing advanced manufacturing back to the U.S. and credited the University of Arizona with helping, saying it means thousands of well-paying jobs.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (U.S. senator). In a separate post, Gallego said Latino men need support to be good fathers, partners, business owners and community leaders while Latinas are valued and empowered.
