Overnight storms trigger flash flood warning, slow I-10. Heavy rain moved across the Tucson metro overnight into Monday morning, prompting a National Weather Service flash flood warning for central Pima County in effect until 7 a.m. and, earlier, a severe thunderstorm warning for north-central Pima County near Kitt Peak. KVOA reported a one-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 10 at Prince Road near Miracle Mile amid the rain, with no immediate word on injuries from Arizona DPS. KOLD reported the strongest cells tracked through the northwest side and Marana, and forecasters kept a First Alert/Alert Day designation in place for Monday with more scattered storms expected.

Gallego pledges port staffing push at Nogales town hall. At a town hall in Nogales on Friday, U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego said he would push to ease bottlenecks at ports of entry, protect rural clinics from Medicaid cuts and defend programs including DACA, according to the Nogales International. Gallego also criticized what he described as "trade wars," the outlet reported.

Firearm brought onto Alice Vail Middle School campus, opinion column says. A guest column published Monday in the Arizona Daily Star says parents at Alice Vail Middle School, near 22nd Street and Craycroft Road, learned on Tuesday, Aug. 25, that a student had brought a firearm onto campus, carrying it on the bus and showing it to another student before administrators were alerted. The account comes from an opinion writer rather than the newspaper's news staff; TUSD has not been quoted in the material available to us.

Tortillas Chiwas opens in Barrio Hollywood. The Chihuahuan-style restaurant and tortilleria that opened this past Thursday is Tortillas Chiwas, at 914 N. Grande Ave., in the former Grande Tortilla Factory building. Owners Armando Hernandez and chef Nadia Holguin, a married couple from Chihuahua whose Phoenix-area restaurants have drawn three James Beard Award nominations, are running limited hours — Thursday through Saturday, 5 to 10 p.m. — until a liquor license comes through in September, with Tuesday-through-Saturday daytime hours planned after that, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
Final paving begins on Grant Road Phases 3 and 4. The city's Department of Transportation and Mobility said final paving within the Grant Road Phase 3 and 4 project limits is scheduled to begin Monday and run through Friday, Sept. 11, as the roadway project nears completion. Crews start with the inside lanes between Elaine Boulevard and Sparkman Boulevard, and the city said drivers should expect lane restrictions, traffic shifts and temporary driveway access limits.
Cattle cross again at Agua Prieta under 100% inspection regime. The Arizona Daily Star reports that hundreds of cattle were driven across the border at Agua Prieta, Sonora, marking the reopening of the first U.S.-Mexico livestock trade route after a shutdown of more than 15 months. The Star reports the reopening carries implications for ranchers, cross-border commerce, animal health policy and the U.S. beef supply.

Former Sahuarita mayor Charles Oldham remembered. Charles Oldham, a two-time mayor of Sahuarita, longtime Town Council member and educator, died in July, the Green Valley News reports. The paper's account describes a legacy built over more than four decades of service to the town and its schools.

U of A welcome event marks start of year for Native American students. The University of Arizona College of Education held an outdoor welcome gathering Aug. 27 for Native American students beginning the academic year, AZPM reported, opening with a song in O'odham. The event was part of the college's start-of-semester programming.

Outlook: monsoon activity tapers midweek, with highs climbing back to near 99 Wednesday and Thursday under mostly sunny skies. Storm chances return Thursday afternoon at about 40%. Drivers should continue to avoid flooded washes during afternoon and evening storms.
