Two men killed outside midtown gay bar; police investigating possible hate crime. Tucson police said two men were confronted and shot around 12:30 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of Venture-N at 1239 N. Sixth Ave., and that the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime and a double murder-suicide. Police identified the victims as Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33, and the suspect as Ousman Ceesay, 44, who died after the shooting; TPD said Ceesay was carrying a list of LGBTQ+ businesses and that there is no active, known threat to the broader LGBTQ+ community. Sources close to the investigation told KVOA that a note on Ceesay listed three other LGBTQ-friendly businesses; community members gathered at the bar Monday for a vigil.

Human remains found after house fire near Mescal. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said in a release Monday night that Vail District deputies were called just before 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30 to a house fire in the 15,000 block of South Connor Place, near Mescal, about 40 miles east of Tucson, and were told someone might still be inside. Mescal and Benson fire crews worked for hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused heavy damage including a roof collapse. Arson detectives later located human remains and the remains of a dog; identification is pending.

Suspects in TPD recruit's killing ordered held without bond. Alex James Barnett, 33, and Santiago Jorge Rogers, 39, appeared in Pima County Superior Court on Monday in the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, whose case we have covered previously. A judge set Barnett's bond at $2 million in the killing of Ramirez and the shooting of Ramirez's pregnant fiancée, but ordered him held without bond on a probation violation from a 2020 case; Rogers was ordered held without bond.
California man sentenced over fake ransom notes in Guthrie case. Derrick Anthony Callella, who pleaded guilty to two counts of harassment using a telecommunication device after sending fake ransom messages to Nancy Guthrie's family following her disappearance, was sentenced Monday in federal court in Tucson before Judge John Hinderaker. Accounts of the term differed: KGUN 9 and Green Valley News reported five years of probation, while KOLD reported 10 years.

Pima County issues data center health review as Mayes urges statewide pause. The Pima County Health Department has released a public health review of data centers meant to serve as a framework for decision-makers weighing approval, construction and operation of such projects, with the department's John Neatherlin saying there previously "wasn't a formal tool to do this." Separately, Attorney General Kris Mayes called for a statewide pause on approving new AI-focused data centers, citing rising energy costs and a federal plan to cut Arizona's Colorado River supply.
Federal Colorado River plan expected to raise Arizona water bills. Under a new federal plan for managing the Colorado River, supplies to Central Arizona Project users will be cut, and utility managers say taps will not run dry but costs will rise, according to AZPM. The 336-mile CAP canal delivers river water to both the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
Prop. 317 would label drug cartels terrorist organizations. Arizona voters this November will decide Proposition 317, which would declare Mexican drug cartels equivalent to terrorist organizations under state law and direct the Arizona Department of Homeland Security to address the threat. The measure was referred to the ballot after a multi-year push by House Speaker Steve Montenegro; critics quoted by Arizona Mirror say it would either do nothing or could be used to justify sending military forces to the border.
Rio Nuevo weighs pulling support from stalled Friedman Block. Tucson Spotlight reports the Rio Nuevo District Board is considering withdrawing its support for the long-stalled downtown Friedman Block redevelopment after balking at a $2 million funding request that includes $1 million for nearby parking, based on the board's Aug. 11 meeting. As we reported Aug. 25, the board had committed $2.5 million to the project.
Lap swim pass now required at city pools. The City of Tucson said in a release that beginning today, Sept. 1, a Lap Swim Pass — available as a monthly pass or a punch pass, usable at any city pool offering lap swim — is required to lap swim or water walk at City of Tucson pools. Recreational swim remains free.

Marana says bond money paid for Marana High tennis court work. Marana Unified announced that the eight tennis courts at Marana High School have been resurfaced, work the district said was funded through Proposition 491, the bond voters approved in 2022.

Sen. Ruben Gallego (U.S. senator). Gallego's office issued a release recapping his Friday town hall in Nogales, which the senator said was a reminder that hearing directly from constituents is the best part of the job.
Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-CD6). Ciscomani said in a release that he applauded House passage of "Kayleigh's Law," which he described as further protecting victims of violent crime.
Andy Biggs (R, governor's race — campaign). Biggs' campaign issued a release attacking Gov. Katie Hobbs over what it called a "culture of corruption." Hobbs' campaign posted nothing in the window; neither the Ciscomani nor the JoAnna Mendoza campaign posted in the CD6 race.
