Hobbs, Romero open expanded PFAS treatment plant on Tucson's west side. Gov. Katie Hobbs and Mayor Regina Romero cut the ribbon Tuesday on a $25 million expansion of a Tucson Water treatment facility, completing the Tucson Airport Remediation Project, according to KGUN 9, which reported the work was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. KOLD reported the plant is aimed at south-side groundwater, where contamination dating to the 1981 discovery of the solvent TCE has affected residents for decades. Hobbs used the event to press for broader conservation ahead of a 30% cut to Arizona's Colorado River allocation set to take effect Jan. 1.
Tucson voters to decide 25-year TEP franchise renewal in November. Proposition 421 would renew the franchise agreement between Tucson Electric Power and the city, which has operated under its current agreement since November 2000 and governs utility infrastructure in streets, alleys and public rights-of-way, KVOA reported. If it passes, an accompanying Energy Collaboration Agreement would commit TEP to $2 million a year in infrastructure and sustainability spending, rising 2% annually to a total of $64 million; KVOA reported the funding would not come from higher rates and the franchise fee structure would not change.
Oro Valley council weighs dissolving its tourism commission today. Discussion and possible action to dissolve the year-old Tourism Advisory Commission is on the Town Council's Wednesday agenda, with a draft resolution stating the panel "is no longer needed," according to Tucson Local Media. Four of the five commissioners — Chris DeSimone, Sasha Case, Mark Van Buren and chair Tony D'Angelo — resigned in August, and a September commission meeting was canceled.

City schedules public input on shelter care zoning rules. Tucson's Planning and Development Services Department, working with the University of Arizona's Drachman Institute, announced three community feedback opportunities between Sept. 13 and Oct. 4 on updates to the city's zoning regulations for shelter care. The city said the review follows its Feb. 3 declaration of a Housing and Homelessness Emergency, intended to remove zoning and permitting barriers to creating shelter beds.

Police confirm Venture-N shooting was a hate crime and double murder-suicide. As we reported Tuesday, two men were killed outside the midtown gay bar early Monday; Tucson police said Tuesday that Ousman Ceesay, 44, shot and killed Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33, in the parking lot near Sixth and Speedway before turning the gun on himself. Detectives said a search of Ceesay's home turned up a note indicating he acted alone and was motivated by hate toward the LGBTQ+ community, that he carried a list of LGBTQIA+ businesses, and that all recovered casings came from a single 9mm handgun; investigators believe he had only recently arrived in the Tucson area. A memorial has grown outside the bar, and a community candlelight vigil is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Catalina Park, 941 N. Fourth Ave.

Border Patrol operation in Arizona nets 143 arrests, including 95 truck drivers. The Border Patrol said a multi-day operation in the Yuma area led to the arrests of 143 people, among them 95 commercial truck drivers described as undocumented immigrants who held valid state-issued commercial driver's licenses, the Arizona Daily Star reported. KOLD reported 76 of those licenses were issued in California and six in New York. The arrests are tied to a federal crackdown on non-domiciled commercial licenses and stricter English-proficiency enforcement by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

ICE arrests in Arizona spiked in July, data project finds. ICE agents made nearly 2,200 arrests statewide in July, and most of those detained had no criminal record, according to AZPM, citing the Deportation Data Project, a UCLA and UC Berkeley initiative that obtains immigration enforcement records through public records litigation.

Casino Del Sol's new Tucson property set to open Nov. 15. Casino Del Sol Vahi Taa'am, a 163,000-square-foot property with a 52,334-square-foot gaming floor and roughly 924 slot machines plus two blackjack pits, is scheduled to open Nov. 15, Tucson Local Media reported. General Manager Lesah Sesma said the campus will include multiple food vendors and shops, among them the Old Pascua "OP" Grill and Sewa Market, which reflect Pascua Yaqui culture.
7 Brew wins bankruptcy auction for 73 former Salad and Go sites, 41 of them in Arizona. The coffee chain agreed to pay about $143.2 million for the shuttered locations after Dutch Bros declined to submit a topping bid and was named backup bidder, according to bankruptcy filings reported by KGUN 9 and KOLD. KOLD reported 7 Brew currently has two Tucson locations.

Oro Valley memorial to mark 25 years since Sept. 11 attacks. A 30-minute sunset remembrance is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Arizona Heroes Memorial near the south end of Naranja Park, 810 W. Naranja Drive, Tucson Local Media reported. The program includes the Canyon del Oro High School Canyon Singers performing the national anthem, an invocation and moments of silence with a bell rung for each of the four attacks.
