Oro Valley council votes to appeal its own planner's ruling on Rancho Vistoso parcel. The Town Council voted 6-0 Wednesday to appeal a planning and zoning administrator's Aug. 21 decision on what can be built on the Rancho Vistoso parcel next to Safeway. The appeal puts the question of allowable development on the site back before the town.
Forest Service approves South32's Hermosa critical minerals plan in the Patagonia Mountains. The Coronado National Forest approved South32 Hermosa Inc.'s Critical Minerals Project Exploration and Mine Plan of Operations on Sept. 2, according to KVOA. Officials said it is the first Forest Service critical minerals project in the country designated under Title 41 of the FAST Act, a federal permitting-coordination program.
City says Labor Day trash and recycling collection will run as usual. The city announced that trash and recycling will be collected on the normal Monday schedule Sept. 7 and that the Los Reales Sustainability Campus and landfill will be open. City offices will be closed that day, and Environmental Services customers were directed to call (520) 791-3171 or email EShelp@tucsonaz.gov.

Police say gunman in Venture-N killings acted alone and left a note indicating anti-LGBTQ motive. In a Sept. 1 update, Tucson police said homicide detectives found no apparent connection between the suspect and the two men killed outside the North Sixth Avenue bar, and that the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said a search warrant at his residence turned up a note indicating a targeted attack motivated by hate; the Arizona Daily Star reports the gunman, identified by police as Ousman Ceesay, 44, had recently moved to Tucson after living in Oklahoma City. As we reported Wednesday, police are investigating the killings as a hate crime.

Inmate captured hours after fleeing federal prison complex on Wilmot Road. Prison staff spotted James Casady Cangro, 46, near the visitor parking lot of the Federal Correctional Complex at 8901 S. Wilmot Road about 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, and he ran into the surrounding desert, according to a U.S. Marshals Service release. Deputy U.S. marshals took Cangro into custody later that day not far from the facility, with no injuries reported, after a search involving the Bureau of Prisons, Tucson police, the Pima County Sheriff's Department and Border Patrol.

Third arrest in killing of TPD recruit: person of interest detained at Douglas port. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Alexis Monter, 30, a U.S. citizen, was arrested Sunday evening as he tried to enter through the pedestrian lane at the Douglas Port of Entry on a warrant identifying him as a person of interest in the Aug. 19 shooting of recruit Carlos Ramirez. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said Monter is believed to be the last registered owner of the Acura MDX believed to have been involved, and that the investigation continues; two other suspects were ordered held without bond, as we reported Tuesday.

TUSD opens community input ahead of possible school consolidations and closures. The Tucson Unified School District is seeking public comment as it weighs consolidations, closures and grade-range changes in response to declining enrollment, under a process it calls "Reimagining Our Schools Together," AZPM reports. Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo told reporters in August he is not certain he will recommend closures to the governing board, but that six to 10 schools should expect some sort of impact over the next several years.

Oro Valley pursuing federal money for new police headquarters on Oracle Road. Town Engineer and Public Works Director Paul Keesler laid out preliminary plans for the Oro Valley Police Department's move into a 50,500-square-foot former medical office building at 13101 N. Oracle Road during an Aug. 4 tour with U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, according to Tucson Local Media. Ciscomani is backing a $4.2 million Department of Justice grant request that, if approved, would help outfit the building with security, digital evidence and communications technology, his office said.

Vigil at Catalina Park draws large crowd for Capara and Siqueiros. Mourners filled Catalina Park near Fourth Avenue on Wednesday evening for a two-hour candlelight vigil for Cameron Davis Capara, 33, and Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, who were killed early Monday outside the Venture-N bar. Families of both men spoke; crowd estimates varied, with the Arizona Daily Star reporting hundreds, Arizona Luminaria more than 1,000 and KGUN and KOLD describing thousands.

Sonoran Restaurant Week runs Sept. 4-13 with more than 100 restaurants. The eighth annual event features prix fixe menus priced at $15, $25, $35, $45 or $55 per person, each at least 20% below regular menu value, according to Tucson Weekly. Beverages, tax and gratuity are not included; some menus are offered for two.
William Shatner headlines Tucson Comic-Con this weekend. The "Star Trek" actor is scheduled to appear Friday and Saturday at the Tucson Convention Center, KVOA reports.
