Judge extends block on postal mail-in voting rule; Pima County recorder says November plans unchanged. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a preliminary injunction Friday blocking a U.S. Postal Service rule tightening mail-in voting requirements, writing that the rule and the executive order behind it are unconstitutional; the administration has appealed. Ballot drop box coming to Oro Valley library parking lot. The Oro Valley Town Council voted Aug. 12 to allow the Pima County Recorder's Office to install and operate a 24/7 official ballot drop box in a lighted, surveilled spot in the library's west parking lot. Cázares-Kelly told the council voters can begin using it Oct. 7, the first day of early voting, through 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Jose Soto, a former associate professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment, told the University of Arizona Faculty Senate at its Aug. 31 meeting that the university requested two involuntary commitment evaluations in the days after it removed him from his tenured position, according to Tucson Spotlight. Soto asked the body for a formal investigation into the incidents.

Body-camera video released from July 19 downtown mass shooting. The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team released footage from the shooting near East Congress Street and North Sixth Avenue in which police say David Leroy French, 21, fired into a crowd, wounding nine people. The graphic video also includes the officer-involved shooting in which French was shot by a Tucson police officer moments later.

Forest Service plans 1,025-acre pile burn near Sonoita starting Sept. 9. The Coronado National Forest's Nogales Ranger District will conduct the Gardner Pile Burn between Sept. 9 and Sept. 23, weather and regulatory approvals permitting, burning vegetation piles north of Gardner Canyon Road and east of Kentucky Camp. Forest officials said the work is intended to reduce fuel buildup near private property, wildlife habitat and grazing lands.
