Judge rejects Tohono O'odham Nation's emergency bid to halt border wall work. A federal judge on Thursday rejected the Tohono O'odham Nation's request for an emergency injunction. That clears the way for the Trump administration to begin removing saguaros and ocotillos in the path of border wall construction on the Nation as soon as Monday, Oct. 12, according to the Tucson Sentinel. Tribal leaders had warned this week that the clearing could start Monday. The case is now before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, which set filing deadlines of Oct. 15 for the Department of Homeland Security and Oct. 22 for the tribe's replies.

Pima Community College asks voters for $250 million bond in Prop. 430. Pima County voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to approve a $250 million general obligation bond for Pima Community College, repaid through property taxes. It is the first bond the college has sought from voters in 30 years, according to Tucson Spotlight. The college estimates $58.9 million for deferred maintenance, energy efficiency and IT, and $57 million to modernize academic spaces. Those plans include moving the Center of Excellence from East Campus and renovating space at Desert Vista Campus. The bond would also fund first responder training.

Forest Service closes 55-mile border stretch to public through January 2029; Rep. Grijalva objects. The Coronado National Forest posted an alert late last month closing a 55-mile stretch of land along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona until Jan. 20, 2029, KJZZ reported. Parts of the closure reach well into the interior. A Forest Service representative said border construction activity creates an "inherent danger." Rep. Adelita Grijalva is pushing back on the closure, according to KJZZ.

Marana ICE detention center could open within 60 days, Tucson Spotlight reports. Management and Training Corporation is hiring facility administrators, security staff and other employees to reopen the former Marana prison as an ICE detention center for up to 1,300 people, according to Tucson Spotlight. The contract is worth more than $400 million. As we reported this week, residents urged the Marana Town Council to oppose the facility. A Spotlight reporter who visited the site Monday was turned away at the gate. Vehicles were visible on the grounds and the sound of metal shearing could be heard.

South Tucson, Pima County roll out police–mental health co-responder program. The City of South Tucson and Pima County are launching the RISE Co-Responder Program, which pairs police officers with mental health specialists on calls involving people in crisis. Officials say the program is aimed at homelessness and fentanyl addiction. KVOA reported that the program is scheduled to expand to South Tucson and surrounding communities in a couple of weeks. One lifelong resident told KVOA she supports the idea but has questions about how its money will be spent.

Second gun store burglary in a week draws ATF. Suspects crashed an SUV into a rolling loading bay door at SNG Tactical, on South Palo Verde Road near Ajo Way, around 5 a.m. Thursday and took several handguns and rifles. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said the suspects left before deputies arrived. As we reported Tuesday, burglars drove an SUV into an eastside gun store earlier this week. Tucson Police, the Sheriff's Department and the ATF are investigating both cases.

Tucson man charged with threatening to bomb White House. Jacob Aaron Hicks, 46, of Tucson, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of making an interstate threat, according to the Department of Justice. Prosecutors allege he emailed a local news station on Sept. 23 claiming an imminent bomb attack on the White House and other Washington, D.C., locations. KOLD reported the email also threatened to release anthrax in Tucson. Hicks made his first federal court appearance Thursday.

Raytheon lands up to $6.3 billion missile contract, with production centered in Tucson. Raytheon has been awarded a five-year contract worth up to $6.3 billion to produce and sustain Standard Missile 3 Block IB interceptors, KVOA reported. The contract includes two optional years. The company told KVOA production will take place primarily at its Tucson facilities, as well as in Huntsville, Alabama.

Valencia Road improvements between Kolb and Houghton completed. The city announced the completion of the Valencia Road Improvement Project from Kolb Road to Houghton Road. The city said the project includes safety, mobility and access improvements along the corridor. Mayor Regina Romero, the Ward 4 council office and the Regional Transportation Authority plan a ribbon cutting. The project was part of the 2006 voter-approved RTA plan.

Poet laureate brings 25 poets to Armory Park Saturday. Tucson Poet Laureate Logan Phillips will host Poets in the Park, a free, all-ages reading featuring 25 local poets at Armory Park on Saturday, Oct. 10. The event's theme is "Poets are cultural workers."

Saguaro City Music Theatre opens "Sister Act" at the Berger. Saguaro City Music Theatre will stage "Sister Act" from Saturday, Oct. 10, through Sunday, Oct. 25. It is the company's first show since taking over management of the historic Berger Performing Arts Center. The company plans to produce its own shows there and rent the space to other community groups.
