Arizona courts cyberattack exposed data of more than 1.3 million people. The Arizona Supreme Court released new details on a cyberattack discovered in late September, saying hackers may have stolen names, case numbers and Social Security numbers belonging to more than 1.3 million people, according to KOLD. The records are part of the state's FARE system, which collects debt from civil and traffic violations. Court officials said the breach began when an employee clicked a malicious link, and they urged those affected to freeze their credit with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Border agents pepper-spray Lochiel protesters; new tree-sit set up across the line. As we reported Tuesday, contractors cut down the "Grandmother" cottonwood near Lochiel. Protests have continued since then. Border Patrol agents used pepper spray on demonstrators Wednesday evening while a woman was locked to a gravel-hauling truck used in wall construction, and she was detached and detained. Protesters have also set up another tree-sit in a second old-growth cottonwood, dubbed "Abuela," just across the border in La Noria, Mexico, according to KJZZ. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said agents made several arrests Monday after an alleged assault on a federal officer, KVOA reported.

Oro Valley moves to close data center loophole, shelves 888-acre annexation. The Oro Valley Town Council on Wednesday started an expedited code change aimed at closing a loophole in how data centers can be allowed in town. The council also shelved a proposed 888-acre annexation.

Tohono O'odham leaders say border wall clearing on the Nation could start Monday. Tohono O'odham leaders and faith leaders held a prayer vigil Wednesday in the Nation's San Xavier District to oppose border wall construction on tribal land. Chairman Verlon Jose said crews plan to return Oct. 12 to begin clearing vegetation along the Nation's border, including saguaros, KGUN reported. The Nation sued the federal government in June. A federal judge ruled against the tribe in August, and the Nation's appeal is pending before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, according to KVOA.

Tucson voters to decide TEP franchise extension and sales tax reauthorization. The city said two city propositions appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. Proposition 421 is a franchise agreement for Tucson Electric Power, and Proposition 422 is the reauthorization of a one-tenth-cent sales tax. The city also said its publicity pamphlet has been mailed to households with a registered voter. The current 25-year TEP agreement was last approved by voters in 2000 and expires in April, KOLD reported.

Public voting open on Tucson's preapproved middle housing designs. The city announced that its People's Choice Survey for the Middle Housing Design Competition is open through 5 p.m. Oct. 22. Residents can review 50 submitted designs and vote for their top three. According to the city, survey results and a review by a panel of architects and design professionals will pick 15 designs. Each selected design will receive a $1,000 award and join a library of preapproved plans that property owners can build from.

Southern Arizona education leaders rally in Tucson against Prop. 320. Education leaders from across Southern Arizona gathered in Tucson on Wednesday to oppose Proposition 320. The statewide measure would eventually require certain school districts to direct at least 60% of operational spending to "direct instructional expenses." Supporters say the measure would put more money into classrooms and teacher pay. Opponents, including educators at the event, say it does not count roles such as special education teachers, bus drivers and school psychologists and could lead to cuts.

El Güero Canelo up for sale. Owner Daniel Contreras is selling the Sonoran hot dog chain because he plans to retire, according to the Arizona Daily Star. A LoopNet listing includes the three Tucson restaurants, at 2480 N. Oracle Road, 5201 S. 12th Ave. and 5802 E. 22nd St., plus an office building at 2470 N. Oracle Road, KOLD reported. Contreras founded the business as a food cart in 1993, and it has earned a James Beard Award.

American Battery Factory site work to begin this month. American Battery Factory is moving ahead with its battery manufacturing plant, national headquarters and research facility at the Pima County Aerospace Research Campus, KVOA reported. The update came from County Administrator Jan Lesher, who briefed supervisors Oct. 6. Tucson firm Borderland Construction is expected to complete the main construction road between Oct. 19 and 23. Clearing of the full site is set to begin in January 2027.

Final paving done on Grant Road between Sparkman and Swan. The Regional Transportation Authority said paving is complete on the Grant Road 3&4 segment, from Sparkman to Swan. Signing, striping, concrete work and landscaping remain. According to the RTA, the project, which began in May 2024, is on schedule to finish by the end of 2026. It adds travel lanes, wider sidewalks, more signalized crosswalks, bike lanes and indirect left turns at Alvernon.

Tucson Meet Yourself returns downtown next weekend. The 52nd annual festival will take over Jacomé Plaza and surrounding areas next weekend, according to the Arizona Daily Star. This year it will be divided into 10 "villages" representing the region's folklife traditions.

Santa Rita Park reopens after $8 million renovation. The city said Santa Rita Park, 401 E. 22nd St., reopened last week after an estimated $8 million, multiyear renovation. The project added a shaded splash pad and playground, walking paths, an event plaza, more than 300 trees and shrubs, two multipurpose fields and a relocated baseball field. According to the city, funding came from Tucson Delivers Proposition 407, city funds, impact fees and a Tohono O'odham Nation gaming grant.
