SpaceX is behind a proposed 6-gigawatt data center near Willcox. Tombstone Resources L.L.C. has filed an application with Cochise County for a supercomputer and AI data center campus on about 747 rural acres along U.S. 191 near the community of Cochise. The site is next to the Apache Generating Station and about 80 miles east of Tucson. At full build-out, the campus's nine buildings would need about 6 gigawatts of power, which the Arizona Republic calculated is about 2.5 times that of all Maricopa County data centers combined. SpaceX said at a Nov. 4 town hall that it is the company behind the project, KVOA reported. The application projects about 1,000 permanent jobs, water use of about 7 to 10 acre-feet a year with dry cooling, and lower bills for electric co-op members, though the co-op's letter says those benefits "are not guaranteed." The county says the application's details have not been independently verified. The Planning and Zoning Commission holds a public hearing Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. in Bisbee, and its decision is final unless appealed to the Board of Supervisors.
