Pima County Treasurer Brian Johnson Resigns Effective Sunday. Democrat Brian Johnson, who won the Pima County Treasurer's race in 2024, has resigned with his departure set for June 15. No reason was publicly disclosed; the resignation creates a county vacancy appointment process for one of Pima County's key financial offices.

Arizona Lawmakers Refer School Voucher Restriction Measure to Voters. The Arizona Legislature struck a deal with the Arizona Education Association to place a ballot measure restricting allowable purchases under the state's Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) voucher program. The measure would codify a list of items prohibited from ESA spending — a compromise following years of controversy over the program's scope and the lack of guardrails on what parents can buy with public education funds.

South Tucson Could Receive $850K in Federal Funding for Home Repairs and Youth Center. A House appropriations bill championed by Rep. Adelita Grijalva includes $850,000 for South Tucson's Neighborhood Revitalization Project, part of more than $15 million in proposed Southern Arizona community investments. If enacted, the funding would support emergency home repairs for low-income homeowners and upgrades to the John Valenzuela Youth Center, including kitchen, computer, and air conditioning improvements.

The ongoing search underscores the difficult conditions families face when looking for loved ones who go missing near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Former ASDB Educators Open New Downtown School for Blind and Visually Impaired Students. The Tucson School for the Blind, a nonprofit private school founded by former Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind teachers, is set to open Aug. 3 at 149 N. Stone Ave. in downtown Tucson. The school was created to fill the gap left by the controversial closure of ASDB's century-old Speedway campus and will offer individualized instruction in a small-school setting, with access to free public transit and downtown community connections built into the program.

Casino Del Sol Announces Opening Date for Tucson's First In-City Casino Location. Casino Del Sol has set an opening date for its new facility inside Tucson city limits — the first casino physically located within the city. The location will feature 924 slot machines and is expected to create approximately 500 jobs, according to the company.

Fort Lowell Preservation Project Completed. A preservation effort at Tucson's historic Fort Lowell site has been completed. Fort Lowell, a significant 19th-century U.S. Army post on Tucson's northeast side, has been the subject of long-running preservation work to protect its adobe ruins and historical structures.

Reid Park Zoo Launches 'Safari Nights' Weekend Series. Reid Park Zoo's Safari Nights series begins this Saturday, running 6–8 p.m. every Saturday through Aug. 8 (except July 4). The evening events offer Tucsonans a chance to enjoy the zoo during cooler temperatures as the summer heat builds.
