Voucher oversight initiative qualifies for November ballot. A ballot initiative that would increase oversight of Arizona's school voucher (Empowerment Scholarship Account) program submitted more than 420,000 signatures to the secretary of state Thursday — well above the roughly 256,000 required to qualify for the November ballot. Organizers say the cushion is intended to absorb signatures that may be disqualified during review.
Tucson residents have one week left to comment on development code changes. The City of Tucson is offering residents a final opportunity to weigh in on proposed changes to its development regulations, according to KVOA. The public comment window closes within the next week.

Woman, 66, found dead near Sabino Canyon trail. A 66-year-old woman was found dead Tuesday morning near the Bear Canyon Trail in Sabino Canyon, according to the Arizona Daily Star. Authorities have not released additional details on the cause of death.
Likely arson fire set at Joel D. Valdez Main Library in downtown Tucson. Firefighters responded Thursday to a fire in a men's restroom at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, which KOLD characterized as a likely arson call. KVOA described it as a small fire. No injuries were reported in either account.
Tucson man deported to Venezuela died in earthquake. A Tucson man is among thousands who died in recent earthquakes in Venezuela, his family confirmed to local media. The earthquakes struck hours after his deportation flight arrived in the country. Tucsonans with ties to Venezuela are organizing donation drives to send aid to affected communities.

Propane leak near Irvington and Palo Verde prompts evacuations, roads since reopened. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said a propane leak Thursday caused evacuations and road closures near Irvington Road and Palo Verde, according to KOLD. The area has since reopened.
Man pleads guilty to writing fake ransom note in Nancy Guthrie case. Derrick Callella pleaded guilty to writing an "imposter" ransom note connected to the Nancy Guthrie case and is scheduled to be sentenced September 10. He could receive up to 10 years of probation.

Sahuarita Police sergeant sentenced to probation in shooting-range endangerment case. A Sahuarita Police Department sergeant who pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor endangerment — stemming from a Marana shooting-range incident that endangered a grandmother and her grandson — was placed on three years' probation Thursday, according to the Green Valley News.

Armory Park reopens after nearly $2 million renovation. The City of Tucson held a grand reopening Thursday for Armory Park, which received upgrades including a new pavilion and dog park as part of a renovation project totaling close to $2 million.
City breaks ground on long-awaited downtown skate park.
